Monroe Henderson

Monroe Clarence Henderson was born November 16, 1934, in the Roberts Branch area of Jack County, Texas. A rancher all his life, Monroe was the son of Otis Clarence and Vera Celestial (Kirk) Henderson. Monroe married Carol Durham October 5, 1957, at the Memorial Christian Church in Jacksboro, Texas. He attended Texas Tech University on an athletic scholarship, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Husbandry. Monroe was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Jacksboro. He was a 1953 graduate of Jacksboro High School, served on the Board of Directors of both the Jacksboro National Bank and First National Bank, was a member of Texas Southwestern Cattle Raiser's Association, Texas Cattle Feeder's Association, Texas Tech Lettermen’s Association and Red Raider Club, Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Colonial Country Club and Jacksboro Jaycees. Although he would not want to talk about it himself, Monroe was an accomplished athlete. He lettered in football, baseball, and was an all-district basketball player in high school. He also was a three-year letterman in baseball at Texas Tech where he was a captain and led the team in batting average, hits and stolen bases during his senior year. He took up tennis in his late 30’s and was nationally ranked by age 45. Honest, loyal and trustworthy, Monroe was admired by business associates, friends and family members. Monroe passed away Wednesday, December 20, 2017, in Fort Worth, Texas. He was 84 years old. He is preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Vera Henderson and sister, Elizabeth Henderson Ward. Survivors include his wife, Carol Durham Henderson; children, Donna Henderson Craft and husband James Ross Craft; Joseph Curtis Henderson and wife Janice; Charles Clarence Henderson and wife Loria; grandchildren, Corbin Monroe Craft; Peter Young Henderson; Katherine Ewing Henderson; Ezra Joe Henderson and Ariel Henderson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
