Larry Mack Johnson

September 13, 1944 - March 24, 2022

Larry M. Johnson was born in Decatur, Texas on September 13, 1944 to Arthur D. and Grace (Hunter) Johnson. He died in Graham, Texas on March 24, 2022. A memorial service will be held at Coker Funeral Home on Friday, April 1, 2022 at 5 p.m. Larry was the youngest of four boys. He and his three brothers (Teddy, Perry, and Roland) grew up in Chico, Texas, where Larry graduated in 1963. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from East Texas State University in Commerce in 1967 and a Master of Education degree from North Texas State University in 1982. Mr. Johnson began his teaching career in Olney, Texas. He later became a teacher and coach in Kermit, Texas before coming to Jacksboro in 1973. After two decades of teaching and coaching in Jacksboro, he was named principal of John R. Lowrance Middle School. He remained in that position until his retirement in 2004, having given 31 years of loyal and dedicated service to Jacksboro Independent School District and every student who walked the halls of John R. Lowrance Middle School. Larry was a member of Memorial Christian Church (The Parish), Retired Teachers of Texas, and Fort Richardson Masonic Lodge #320. Larry was an avid fisherman, hunter, and sports fan. His greatest joy was watching his family, former students and fellow teachers pursue success and strive to reach their potential. One could not visit with Larry for any amount of time before hearing a story or two about what was happening with those he loved. His greatest sense of accomplishment was witnessing and sharing the success of those who he was honored to guide, mentor and assist. Larry was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. Survivors include his son, Jason Johnson and wife Leann; three grandchildren, Maxi Schultz, Justin Gowdy Johnson, and Garrison Tate Johnson; and Margaret Johnson Armstrong, all of Jacksboro and several nephews and a niece. The family suggests that, in lieu of flower, memorials be made to the donor’s charity of choice. Larry’s favorite charities were Concerned Citizens of Jack County, Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, and West Texas Boys Ranch in San Angelo, Texas; all of which made treasured impacts in his life
