Janice Dodson Cawthorn

Janice Dodson Cawthorn, 87, passed away peacefully, in her sleep on March 1, 2026, in Statesboro, Georgia. Born on December 27, 1938, in Jacksboro, Texas, Janice lived a life marked by dedication to education, community service, and her family. Janice graduated from Nocona High School before pursuing higher education at Texas Christian University and Hampton University (formerly Hampton Institute), where she earned her bachelor’s degree. She later achieved a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Virginia. Her passion for teaching and nurturing young minds led her to a distinguished career as an elementary school teacher and principal within Virginia Public Schools. She further extended her influence by mentoring future educators as a university instructor at Old Dominion University and Hampton University. Later in her career, she brought her talents to NASA, contributing to its mission with the same dedication she showed throughout her professional life. In retirement, Janice remained deeply engaged with her community. Known for her activism and patriotism, she participated in marches even when it became physically challenging. Her commitment to making a difference was evident in every aspect of her life. Janice had a wide array of interests that brought joy to both herself and those around her. She was an avid collector of East Asian art and found peace in gardening. Her love for animals was reflected in her fostering of cats, including her beloved companion Maggie. She also enjoyed crafts and playing the piano—a talent she shared with her family during cherished Christmas Eve gatherings where she played carols while everyone sang along with spirited enthusiasm. Above all else, Janice was a devoted mother to three children: Michelle Cawthorn Chandler (Ray), Julianna Cawthorn Singleton (Fred), and Jerome Henry Cawthorn (Dee). She took immense pride in their lives and accomplishments. She is also survived by her brother Larry Homer Dodson (Becky), numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought light into her life, and countless others who were touched by her kindness and generosity. Janice was predeceased by her parents, Homer and Gertrude Dodson; and sisters Linda Walker and Celia David. Her legacy as an educator, activist, mother, and friend will be remembered fondly by all who knew her. May the memory of Janice Dodson Cawthorn bring comfort to those who loved her.
